FC Basel have postponed their Swiss Super League fixture against FC Thun following a fire at the St Jakob-Park stadium.

The blaze broke out on Friday evening, completely destroying the first-team dressing room, including players’ kits and boots. It also caused extensive damage to equipment rooms, the coaching and team manager’s office, physio and shower areas, as well as medical and technical equipment.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire “has not yet been clarified,” according to a club statement.

Basel, currently fourth in the Swiss Super League, were scheduled to face league leaders FC Thun on Saturday. The club said: “The fire, accompanied by heavy smoke development, caused significant damage and completely destroyed the entire locker room area of the first team. Due to the damage incurred and no usable game and medical equipment available, the away game against FC Thun is not possible for FCB.”

The postponement has been approved by the league, and a new date for the match will be arranged.

St Jakob-Park previously hosted the 2016 Europa League final, where Liverpool faced Sevilla, as well as the 2025 Women’s Euros final between England and Spain.
