In Game 3 of the CBA playoffs quarterfinals, the Beijing Ducks returned home to face the Guangdong Southern Tigers. After a hard-fought battle, Beijing secured a 2-1 series victory and will face top-seeded Shanghai in the semifinals.
The game started slowly, with both teams struggling to find rhythm. Zhou Qi broke the deadlock from the free-throw line at 8:43 mark. Beijing attacked the paint aggressively, while Guangdong went scoreless for three minutes except for fouls. Midway through the first quarter, Guangdong hit consecutive three-pointers, but Zeng Fanbo answered with a triple of his own. Jemison and Zeng Fanbo drove to the basket, while Guangdong’s McColl and Saric found success in the post. Hu Mingxuan and Spellman traded three-pointers in a shooting duel, giving Guangdong a 21-15 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Guangdong’s Quinn opened with a mid-range jumper, but Jemison responded with a strong drive. Chen Yingjun and Zhou Qi drew fouls for free throws, while Guangdong countered with mid-range shots and drives. Beijing went on a scoring run in the latter half, while Guangdong’s offense stalled. Zhou Qi’s emphatic dunk capped the half, putting Beijing ahead 40-35.
After halftime, Quinn threw down a dunk to start the third quarter, but Beijing answered with a flurry of three-pointers. Quinn fought single-handedly, converting an and-one and an alley-oop, but Beijing’s balanced attack proved too much. By the end of the third quarter, Beijing led 61-53.
The fourth quarter saw both teams attacking the rim. Chen Yingjun and Zhou Qi drove for Beijing, while Guangdong countered with McColl, Quinn, and Hu Mingxuan. Despite back-and-forth action, Beijing’s depth and firepower prevailed. A late push by Beijing’s domestic players sealed an 88-73 victory.
After the game, Beijing guard Jemison spoke at the press conference. “We knew what we had to do to prepare for this game—stay mentally focused. From yesterday’s practice to today’s shootaround, we prepared with high concentration. We knew our opponent is very strong, and this was a tough battle. I’m proud of my teammates’ fighting spirit, but our task is not yet complete,” Jemison said.
Jemison finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and 3 steals on 6-of-13 shooting (3-of-6 from three).
When asked how Beijing overcame Guangdong, Jemison highlighted two factors: intense mental focus and thorough preparation. He noted that the team studied their opponent’s playing style extensively during training, allowing them to know their enemy and themselves. His remarks were clear, honest, and right on point.
