Jeremy Monga: Details of United’s talks for “fantastic” Leicester winger

Manchester United recently played out a forgettable goalless draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, managing only two shots on target. Fortunately for manager Michael Carrick, the stalemate is unlikely to affect United’s final league position.

Looking ahead to next season, the Red Devils are actively seeking to bolster their attacking options by acquiring established stars as well as promising young talent.

Reports emerged on Friday that Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, held a meeting with Leicester City officials. It is understood that United hold a strong interest in Leicester’s record-breaking winger Jeremy Monga, who became the club’s youngest Premier League player at just 15 years and 271 days old last year.

Interestingly, it was United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy who gave Monga his senior debut during his time as Leicester manager. Van Nistelrooy previously praised the youngster, saying: “He’s a great winger and has speed. He’s a fantastic talent, a great boy. He deserved these minutes and hopefully, more to come.”

According to the Daily Mirror (via Leicester Mercury), United are currently leading the race to sign the 16-year-old electric winger, having initiated talks with Leicester over a summer transfer. Monga, known for his sharp decision-making and movement in the final third, made 30 appearances across all competitions last season.

Monga signed a new deal at the King Power Stadium last summer, which is set to convert into a professional contract when he turns 17 in July. However, with Leicester facing relegation to League One, the England U19 international is unlikely to remain at the club.

The report suggests Leicester could receive close to £6 million for Monga, which would be the highest fee the club has ever received for a teenager.

Manchester United also remain keen on signing a first-team ready winger, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers high on their list. Villa are reportedly open to selling Rogers, valued at around £80 million. The 23-year-old dribbling wizard, who previously played under Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, has been directly involved in 14 Premier League goals this season.
